Higher Harvest

Higher Harvest is my effort in the battle against Food Apartheid. It really disturbs me that in the USA there are people who do not have access to quality food.

Originally from Washington, DC, I went to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to study Agriculture and Food Microbiology. I paid for undergrad and grad school school by working on farms.

I’ve been on this journey since 2006, and have given away over 10,000lbs of food from my farms and backyard gardens!

As a business I provide:

•Virtual Garden Consultations

•Food Education

•Garden Installation & Maintenance

•Garden Counseling

•Produce Boxes

Farm Visit: Whitelock Community Farm

This week I had a chance to tour a farm friends have been buzzing about for months. Located in Reservoir Hill, walking distance from Druid Hill Park is Whitelock Community Farm. A block of vacant homes converted to a food oasis providing quality at a low cost. You will find everything from bok choi to sorrel, swiss chard to kohlrabi and your favorite greens. I have always known Whitelock by their one of a kind bike powered mobile market. It was truly a pleasure to see the "HQ" and meet the farm manager Alison. A friendly and informational experience-taught farmer with a background in Art. As we toured the farm, I was truly impressed by the diversity of their plots. What also caught my attention was the relationship between Alison and the neighborhood kids.

When it comes to "farming in the hood" Whitelock sets the example. Produce is very reasonably priced and all forms of payment are accepted. Let me be specific, Whitelock accepts "Cash, Credit, SNAP/EBT, FMNP, WIC, andFruit/Vegetable Vouchers". Add to that, there is a Double Dollars program. For example if you spend $5 using EBT in return you get $10 worth of produce.

The farm also features, hoop houses, community composting bins and even a worm box! Can we say #FarmGoals! I always love visiting other farms. If you have a farm send me an invite here. I'd love to come visit and talk farm life.
